Señor Coconut Y Su Conjunto – Autobahn (Cumbia Merengue) (2011)

Latin American rhythms are hot. German electronica is cool. Mix the two together, and the result should be lukewarm. But Señor Coconut laughs at such an overly rational physical sciences approach to linguistics and music. Actually, I suspect he laughs at most things. You’d expect this cover of the Kraftwerk classic, performed by a highly prolific German producer in a tropical stylee, to be the most godawful novelty mess. But the fact is that Señor Coconut, AKA Uwe Schmidt, treats the vast panorama of Autobahn with considerable respect. While this music is a joke, and a rather broad one at that, the little musical touches he applies actually sound really good. The xylophone breakdown in the middle of this cover version really does credit to the original source material. While this is only a third the length of the original, other than that it’s a surprisingly faithful rendition. It’s taken from the 2000 release El Baile Alemán, consisting of nothing but Kraftwerk cover versions. A daunting prospect, but a perversely enjoyable one. [Source]
