From a super-huge collection of work recorded by producer Joe Meek with a host of different British female vocalists! As has been well documented by other compilations in recent years, Meek was a groudnbreaking producer who helped redefine the sound of British pop in the 60s – almost a UK equivalent to Phil Spector, but with a sound that was rougher and madder. The sound is bizarrely beautiful, perhaps a bit more restrained than Joe’s own work, but with these mad touches underneath that show that things are not all candy floss and gingham!
The Sharades are two of the Ladybirds. Maggie Stredder(with the glasses) & Gloria George. Backing was provided by Ritchie Blackmore & The Outlaws.
This cover does have an 80’s new-wave/techopop feel to it. Apparently Joe Meek was ahead of his time musically producing this song as well as ” Telstar “!
