The darker side of Danceteria: Marc Almond’s voice at full stretch over Dave Ball’s rave-sized synths, and a song set in the queer leather bars and sex clubs of the Meatpacking District in the early eighties, where the night crowd went looking for some kind of redemption as the night wore down. Escapist, euphoric, and one of the last things Ball co-wrote and produced before he died in October 2025; the album followed on September 25.

Written by Marc Almond and Dave Ball. Marc Almond: vocals. Dave Ball: music and production. From Danceteria, Republic of Music, 2026. Photograph: Berenice Abbott, West Washington Market, Washington Street and Loew Avenue, Manhattan, August 18, 1936, from Changing New York, made for the Federal Art Project – the market halls stood at the river’s edge of what became the Meatpacking District.
