For Protomartyr’s seventh album, Hotel Usona, Joe Casey imagined his country as an aging hotel, each song a room with its own troubled guest. “Sounds We Cannot Hear”, the first single and the album’s second track, takes on the slow paralysis and constant distortion of modern life over the Detroit band’s tense, physical post-punk. The film, starring Nate Varrone, was shot at a teppanyaki grill in Glendale.
Words and voice: Joe Casey. Recorded with Dave Fridmann at Tarbox Road Studios in western New York; co-produced by Greg Ahee; horns by Jon Fridmann. From Hotel Usona, Domino, September 25, 2026.
