Jackie Leven, who has died of cancer aged 61, was a brilliant outsider, a remarkably prolific Scottish singer-songwriter who built up a devoted cult following during his lengthy, wildly varied and often turbulent career, but never achieved the level of success that he deserved. An intense, passionate giant of a man, he first came to attention in the late 1970s and early 80s, as leader of the highly praised but commercially unsuccessful band Doll By Doll. He went on to found a successful charity, the Core Trust, which treats “addicts of any sort”, before continuing his musical career as a soloist – still acquiring devoted fans, but never selling many albums. Los Angeles resident Jimmy Tamborello records, releases and occasionally performs music under the name Dntel. In 2007, we at Sub Pop released the Dntel album Dumb Luck which included contributions from a whole raft of talented people too numerous to list here (a short version of that list would include members of Grizzly Bear, Rilo Kiley, Bright Eyes, and Arthur & Yu). And at the end of 2010, we released a pair of companion EPs by Dntel, entitled After Parties 1 and After Parties 2. Together these two EPs total 8 tracks, all of them instrumental, and featuring (to the best of our “knowledge”) a list of guest contributors numbering exactly zero. Back in 2001, we did not release the Dntel album Life Is Full of Possibilities. This album was originally released by the Plug Research label, and because we’ve always secretly wished we’d put it out back then, we’re releasing an expanded, re-mastered version of the album to mark its ten-year anniversary in October of 2011. Clogs are a mostly instrumental project led by Bryce Dessner and Padma Newsome. Clogs’ “classical” music is composed by a combination of improvisational practice sessions and performances and formal arrangement by Newsome, who arranges the core ideas with reference to diverse classical and folk influences. Taken from the album “Thom’s Night Out” (2001).

The Avalanches watershed debut album, Since I Left You, is about to receive the deluxe 10-Year Anniversary treatment it deserves. Since the record’s global release in 2001, its legacy has continued to grow exponentially. Since I Left You is a record that came seemingly out of nowhere and went on to become not only one of the most influential records of the last decade, but in recent polls conducted by both Pitchfork Media and Australian radio station triple j, as one of the greatest and most beloved albums of all time. For now to help prepare you to rediscover Since I Left You and experience its timeless trip around a world of wonderous sample-based pop one more time, we have uncovered a rare Stereolab Remix of the album’s title track for your enjoyment. Taking a second look at Angels of Light’s catalogue, I think this may well be their best work. It’s so elegant that even the slightest flourish can have a dramatic effect on the mood mood. Gira works best and is most effective with this extra spacious atmosphere – as he has more room to tell you what you’ve don’t want to know about love – and it resonates. Again he assembles a really talented and interesting group of characters – Dana Schector, Larry Mullins, Austinite Thor Harris, and Berlinner Christoph Hahn. Bliss Blood of Pain Teens fame makes a guest appearance. Kid Congo Powers plays on “My True Body” and “New York Girls.” [Source]
